How to Activate Wi-Fi Calls on Android Phones

If you use an operator that supports it, Wi-Fi calling is a great feature to have. This will allow your smartphone to use the best connection in your home to make and receive calls and text messages. This also allows for higher quality audio, and it's perfect if you don't get a good signal in your home.

1. Pull down the notification shade and long-press the Wi-Fi icon to enter the Wi-Fi settings.
2. Scroll down and select "Wi-Fi Preferences".
3. Tap "Advanced".
4. Select Wi-Fi Call and flip the button to "On".

Even though this has been a feature found on Android for years, it is still surprising how many people don't know of its existence. This is partly due to slow operator adoption, but also only a lack of coverage for features and usability. Jio and Airtel are probably the biggest supporters of Wi-Fi calling at the moment.

Wifi calling

Most modern Android phones must support Wi-Fi calling, but can be hit and missed. For example, while the Galaxy S7 generally offers support for Wi-Fi calls, the international version of my phone does not offer that feature. Basically, it must be supported by cellphones and operators.

How to Activate Android Original Wi-Fi Calls

Even if you use a cellphone and combo operator that supports Wi-Fi calling, it might not be activated by default. To turn it on, you must jump to the Settings menu. I use Google Pixel running Android 8.0 (Oreo) here, so the process can vary a little on your cellphone. 

Although you can go through all the steps to enter the Wi-Fi Calling menu (which you will find instructions in the "Just the Steps" box on the right), the easiest thing to do is just look for it. Pull down the notification shade and tap the gear icon to get started.

From there, tap on the magnifying glass, then type "wifi call." If it is available in your situation, it should appear here.

In my scenario, Android does not throw me directly into the Wi-FI Calls menu, but rather to the advanced part of the Wi-Fi settings, where Wi-Fi Calls are found. Continue and tap the Wi-Fi Call option to jump to the menu section.

Boom, there you slide the button to change it. You can also choose whether you want the phone to prefer Wi-Fi networks or cellular networks for calls. Every time you have both, it will use your choice of options, then smoothly switch to the other when one becomes unavailable.
